TWO local physiotherapists have just returned from Buckingham Palace where they were royally congratulated for the part they played in Lancashire County Cricket Club’s triumph in the LV= County Championship.

Lancashire lifted the trophy last month after winning the most prestigious and highly sought after title in English cricket for the first time in 77 years.

But behind every winning team there are unsung heroes – in this case, physios Dave Roberts and Sam Byrne who have been working with the Lancashire team for 10 seasons. The pair recently opened David Robert Physiotherapy Clinic on Northenden Road in Sale.

Sam Byrne is based at our Old Trafford Clinic.

“It was fantastic to be invited,” says Sam. “I’ve never been inside the Palace before and certainly haven’t met any royals before. It was quite a surreal experience. It was great for all our wives and partners to be invited, too. Sales of dresses and shoes must have rocketed!”

Underdogs Lancashire were crowned Champions after beating Somerset in the last moments of one of the most exciting and memorable County Championship climaxes in years.

Team captain Glen Chapple said, “Us guys in white on the pitch always get the recognition and applause when we do well. The fact is we couldn’t do our job without the skill and expertise of people like Sam and Dave who are constantly working hard behind the scenes to keep us on the pitch.

“I limped off on the first morning of our final game with a hamstring tear but miraculously they put me back together and, with a bit of strapping, I was able to get back out and help us to a memorable win.”

Although physios to the stars of sport, David Roberts Physiotherapy Clinics offer a wide range of specialist treatments to improve wellbeing, including physio, massage, acupuncture, podiatry, one-to-one Pilates sessions and nutritional advice.

“Our aim is simple – to become the trusted ‘go to’ clinic for the people of Sale when they have any injuries or niggles. We can’t promise them a brand new body but we’ll give them the next best thing!”

A NEW physiotherapy clinic has opened in Sale and promises a new approach that will put a spring in the step of local people.

Edel Comer, Clinic Manager at David Roberts Physiotherapy Clinic, says:

“We treat all kinds of people. Some who’ve been injured in accidents or playing sport. We also treat people who’ve got aches, pains and niggles that are simply stopping them enjoying life to the full.

“Our approach to treatment is very simple and honest – we aim is to get people fit, healthy and functioning 100% as efficiently and quickly as possible.

Contact our Sale Physio Clinic

“It’s clear from our research that people are often wary of getting treatment for fear of having to spend a fortune. Too many physios blind people with science and snake oil, and keep them coming back for session after session when it’s not always necessary.

“We know the goodwill that’s created when you help a client quickly and properly and don’t just view them as a ‘money cow’.

“They might not have many sessions with us but our payback comes when they recommend us to their friends, family and colleagues. And, of course, when they do need treatment in the future, it’s us they’ll come to – our approach generates a lot of goodwill and loyalty.”

David Roberts Physiotherapy was set up in 1986 and now has six clinics across the North West.

“We’ve been keen to open in Sale for a few years but only found the right property during the summer. It’s been all systems go since then – gutting the building, installing state of the art equipment, decorating, resurfacing the car park – you name it, we’ve done it!

“We open next week and will be offering a wide range of specialist treatments to improve wellbeing, including physio, massage, acupuncture, podiatry, one-to-one Pilates sessions and nutritional advice.

“Our aim is simple – to become the trusted ‘go to’ clinic for the people of Sale when they have any injuries or niggles. We can’t promise them a brand new body but we’ll give them the next best thing!”

Well Done from all at David Roberts Physiotherapy

Finally, after 77 years of near misses Lancashire are County Champions in 2011!! In a season of so much drama and close finishes, the last day of the season didn’t fail to produce.

Warwickshire, who started the final round of matches 3 points clear of us at the top needed only 7 wickets on the final day at relegated Hampshire to win and be crowned champions.

We had battled hard all game against a Somerset team determined to thwart us after their near miss last season and a flat pitch. We struggled to take their remaining 5 wickets on the last day and with overs running out, we finally managed to take their last wicket 4 overs before tea with a direct hit run out. It left us 211 runs to chase in 32 overs or just over a session at 7 an over.

Our openers got us off to a flyer with a stand of 131in 19 overs before both holed out in quick succession. Fair to say nerves in the dressing room and crowd were shredded at this point but two local Lancashire lads Croft and Brown steadied the ship. With 20 runs needed a huge cheer went up in the crowd as the news filtered through that Warwickshire had failed to bowl out Hampshire at the Rose Bowl, and 10 minutes later Croft hit the winning runs to spark scenes not seen by Lancashire fans for a lifetime.

What a season and what a year to be involved with Lancs! Hats off to Dave Roberts (Head of Medical Services), Alex Horn (Strength & Conditioning), Dr Simon Morris (Club Doctor) and Mike Concannon (Podiatry) for their huge efforts contributing to the clubs success this season.

Without you, she would not have been able to revise for her maths exams at University (she writes it all down to remember it!).

As a support teacher in a sixth form college I am coming across more and more cases like my daughter’s, due to the fact possibly that with the advent of the computer, we write less than we used to! You can be sure I will be recommending your practice to my students.

Just wanted to say thank-you for the treatment received following my car accident and to praise Edel for the excellent job that she has done.

Although I was not in acute pain following the car crash it was apparent that my middle to lower back was quite badly hurt. Edel worked on the problem areas over eight sessions and, whilst on occasions it was quite painful and I occasionally felt sore afterwards, invariably a couple of days later the progress was evident. Each time I attended I felt less stiff and a bit stronger. This week, eight weeks on from the accident, I have played a round of golf (with no adverse reaction) and spent a day digging up the lawn at my “renovation property” (again without any reaction). I would not even have contemplated doing either of these things a few weeks back.

So thank-you for all your help and I would not hesitate to recommend Edel and David Roberts Physio.

After having attended several physios over the years for problems with compressed vertebrae in my neck following a motorbike accident 31 years ago, which in time has developed into regular migraines and a constant barrage of general headaches . I was recommended to go to David Roberts Physiotherapy by a colleague at work. I booked an appointment initially for a sports massage.

Upon my arrival I was treated by a lady called Jo, who was very pleasant and friendly, and very good at the sport massage, leaving me feeling far better.

Upon discussion with Jo about my neck condition, she recommended that I see Gareth Wright who was also at their clinic. I doubted very much that he could do anything as over the years I had tried many physios, and all had failed to alleviate my problems.

But being ever the optimist, I booked an appointment with Gareth. On attending I found him to have a friendly manner.

After talking to me, I realised that he actually listened to my problems, and understood them. and within 4 visits he had made a huge difference. He did some manipulation as expected, but also he explained to me in layman’s terms what had happened to my neck, and the best way to exercise it. Along with some handy self help techniques. Which I found extremely helpful have since had very few Migraines, and find a vast improvement and sleep far better now than for the past 30 years.

I would highly recommend David Roberts Physio to anyone as a friendly and expert practice. that genuinely care and take an interest in your problems.

Stephen Moore continues to make excellent progress as he recovers
from surgery on his right shoulder. Moore, or Roger as he is
affectionately known in the dressing room, underwent an arthroscopic
anterior shoulder stabilisation and SLAP repair in August. And as the
new 2011 Lancashire season draws closer he is well on the way to making
a return to competitive cricket.

Following the surgery in August, the initial aims were to protect the
repair by using a sling, and regain the range of movement in his elbow,
wrist and hand. As directed by the surgeon, initially he could only move
his shoulder into certain ranges, known as the ’safe zone’, where the
repaired shoulder capsule and labrum are not put under any stress. With
guidance from the physio staff at Lancashire during the first 6 weeks,
he was gradually able to wean off using the sling, and slowly progress
his range of movement.

While slowly increasing his range of movement, it was important to work
on the muscles that surround the shoulder to provide stability and
control. Without these, the shoulder is potentially unstable and doesn’t
have a base for the powerful rotator cuff muscles to work from. We began
with active assisted exercises, using a shoulder pole so he could assist
movement in his right arm with his uninjured left. Basic weight shift
and balance exercises onto the operated shoulder followed, helping
improve his proprioception and reactive ability.

Once he was comfortable moving into his full range, we progressed to a
variety of light resistance exercises using theraband, aiming to
strengthen the main rotator cuff muscles primarily responsible for
movement in the shoulder. When he had reached his 6 and 12 week
milestones in terms of range, strength and function and had the all
clear from the surgeon, we could then return to light free weights and
some early cricket specific movements like catching and shadow batting,
aimed at getting his movement patterns going.

Batting starts with top hand work only, followed by a graduated
programme of tennis ball, bowling machine balls and eventually cricket
ball practice. Likewise, throwing takes considerable time to build up in
terms of technique, distance and intensity. Even when back practising
his cricket skills with the squad, it is vital Stephen maintains his
daily shoulder strength and stability programme to get back to
pre-injury levels.
