Cervical Spondylosis

Spondylosis is a very general term referring to degenerative osteoarthritis of the joints between the spinal vertebrae and/or neural foraminae (the little holes where nerves originate from). Medical Professionals often describe spondylosis as ‘wear and tear’ and the condition is very common. In fact, most people of adult age have some degree of wear.

Should the vertebrae of the neck be involved, it is labelled cervical spondylosis.

cervical spine neck painThe symptoms vary with the individual. With cervical spondylosis you may experience:

  • Neck pain
  • Constant deep ache that radiates over the shoulder and down to the arms hands and fingers,
  • Numbness or weakness of the arms, hand, fingers or legs
  • Muscles spasm, neck stiffness
  • Headache

In severe cases, it may cause pressure on nerve roots with subsequent sensory and/or motor disturbances, such as pain, paresthesia, or muscle weakness in the limbs. In some circumstances an x-ray, scan or nerve test may be required for diagnosis and to guide best treatment.

Full clinical assessment is highly recommended to guide most effective management of the problem and ensure the best long term outcome.
